Desmarais, Gabrielle

Gabrielle Desmarais is currently completing a Master’s in Religious Studies at the University of Ottawa in Ottawa, Canada, where she earned her Bachelor’s degree (in the same discipline) in 2011. She is currently President of the Religious Studies Graduate Student Association at the University of Ottawa, and was a co-founder of her department’s Undergraduate Journal of Religious Studies. Her current research concentrates on the implications of works of critical religion on the continued use and definition of “freedom of religion” in Canadian courtrooms. Using arguments based in critical religion as well as queer theory, she analyzes the legal definition of “religion” in Canada, in order to examine the effects that the discourse on “freedom of religion” has on the formation and establishment of new religious groups.
